■ 1--AMERICAN IN TURKEY Also available at http://www.amazon.com/American-in-Turkey-ebook/dp/B002YK456E/
Q—How do you meet new friends in a foreign country? A—My neighbors are very friendly and we drink tea and chat together often. When you become friends with one Turk, they introduce you to their friends and so the circle grows. Being an American, people are curious about me and my country and practice their English with me. It might sound funny hearing English and Turkish words in the same sentence – sort of like ‘Turklish.’
Q—Are you afraid to be in a different culture? A—Everybody thinks his or her country, religion and language is the best, and probably should feel that way. But it is important to educate oneself and show respect to others who are different. President Roosevelt said: “There is nothing to fear but fear itself.” *Traveling and meeting people is so enlightening; I recommend it to everybody. If you know people from another country, get together with them and exchange ideas. You might be surprised how different and how alike you both are.
Q—What is the food like in Turkey? Do they serve turkey? A—The food here is delicious. Greek salads and Mediterranean meals are healthy with lots of tomatoes and soups. The breads are out of this world. *Someone told me that when the Republic of Turkey was reorganized in the 1920s the people did not have a lot of money and became very creative with flour. I called it ‘Bread Heaven’ from my first visit here. How can so many kinds of breads taste different and yet all be delicious? *And yes, turkey is available in the supermarkets, but not often. I buy it whenever I see it, though.

Q—I forgot to trim my bushes and trees earlier. Can I do it now? A—Not unless you live in a warm climate. If you cut your bushes and trees after winter starts, they could die from shock. Wait until spring to trim them. If they are blooming bushes (like lilacs or rhododendron), wait until after the flowers fade to trim them.
Q—What are some good flowering bushes for the sun and shade? A—Better Homes and Garden has a good article on this at http://www.bhg.com/gardening/trees-shrubs-vines/shrubs/summer-blooming-shrubs. You can sign up for a free weekly newsletter and keep learning more about gardening.
Q—How can I attract birds to my yard? A—It is too late in the season to plant trees and flowers to attract birds, but you can easily place bird feeders around your property or on your windowsills. *It is important to remember that if you do not plan to feed birds all winter, you must quit feeding them as soon as the weather turns cool. Otherwise, the birds will not migrate to warmer climates and will get hungry and may die. *Check out Better Homes and Gardens for pictures on bird-friendly gardens at: http://www.bhg.com/gardening/design/nature-lovers/grow-a-bird-friendly-garden/?page=2.
Q—I thought you might like to have the names of more perennials which like the shade. Here you go:
*Toad lily blooms in the fall and looks like a white orchid with blue or purple spots.
*Hellebore is also called the Christmas rose and blooms late winter or early spring. It grows 1’ tall in zones 4-8.
*Monkshood grows up to 6’ tall and has lavender blooms in late summer.
*Yellow corydalis blooms from late spring to frost in zones 5-8 and is about 1’ tall.
*Japanese painted fern grows about 1’ tall and has long lacy leaves touched with silver, purple and green.
*Lungwort has pink, white or blue flowers in spring and grows about 1’ tall in zones 4-8.
*Lamium has pink or white flowers with silver leaves on the 8” tall groundcover all through the summer.
*Ajuga is a good 6” tall groundcover with wide variegated leaves and pink or white flowers in zones 3-9.
*Epimedium is another groundcover. It blooms in spring in red, yellow, pink, purple or white. Some varieties are evergreen in warmer climates. In zones 5-9 it grows about 1’ tall.
*Brunnera blooms in the spring with light blue flowers and has large variegated leaves.
*Bigroot geranium has pink or white blooms and grows 2’ tall in zones 4-8.
*Wild ginger grows 6” tall in zones 2-8 and has heart-shaped leaves. Some varieties have evergreen leaves.
*Japanese forestgrass has 1’ tall bright gold, yellow or white variegated leaves which turn reddish in the fall in zones 5-9.
*Lilyturf has grassy foliage and blue or white spikes of flowers in late summer. It grows about 1’ tall in zones 5-10.
*Bleeding heart and astilbe are good to plant together as they bloom at different times. Lots of beautiful pink and white flowers grow up to 4’ tall in zones 3-9.
A—Thanks! Just a note: the zones refer to areas of the country, 1 being far north and 9 being far south. Philadelphia is in zone 4.

3--EASY TO EARN RENTAL INCOME Also at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Earn-Rental-Income-ebook/dp/B002WYJQDE/
Q—Should I furnish the room I have available to rent? A—I found that most tenants have their own furniture. If they need a bed or dresser, I would provide them. Sometimes earlier tenants leave furniture, especially sofas, when then move. I leave them in the room for the next person.
*Spending a lot of money on furniture is not necessary as the rent is pretty much the same and the furniture gets worn out if people are careless.
Q—How much should I charge for renting a room? A—First, check your newspaper to see what other people in your area are charging. If you know someone who rents out rooms, ask them for advice. I kept raising the price until whole families quit phoning to rent the room. One tenant tends to be quiet, but 2 or more people can be noisy.
Q—What happens if a tenant has overnight guests? A—It is important to go over the list of house rules with prospective tenants before giving them the keys. Both of you must sign and keep a copy of the rules. One of the rules says they can have occasional overnight guests but must be discreet.
*I also state that guests must pay $10 per night to ensure only one person lives in the room, but never had to charge anyone that fee.
*Some tenants had their children spend weekends with them and they had to understand that they must supervise the children on the property and were responsible for any damages they may cause.
*See Easy to Earn Rental Income for the 2-page list of important rules which you and tenants need to sign. You can modify the list to suit your situation.

*Be sure to install battery operated smoke alarms and have a fire escape plan. Place the smoke alarms on each floor over the stairwell, over doorways and near bedrooms. Q—How can I afford to give charity when everything costs so much? A—Winston Churchill said: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” You can donate food and other items for free by clicking on www.thehungersite.com daily. It costs you nothing and the sponsors of the ads provide food, mammograms, books, medicine, etc.
*You can also help a needy family by babysitting or taking their kids to the park or zoo. Single Mothers will usually appreciate the break. Also, you can hire older kids to help around the house or garden.
Q—Is it worth spending the money for bottled water? A—You can save a lot of money by purchasing a filter for your tap water and drinking “life” water. Tests show that sometimes water in bottles is actually tap water.
*Also, when water is stored in plastic bottles above 80° F (28° C), the plastic breaks down in chemicals which are not good for you. Water should be carried in glass or metal containers to keep it pure.
Q—How can I save on my electric and heat bill? A—You can switch to one overhead fluorescent light bulb instead of several expensive-to-operate old bulbs. Spend more time in smaller rooms which can be heated more cheaply.
*I use my kitchen for my office and my extra bedroom for a sewing room as they are much smaller than my dining room-living room area I used last year. My electric bill (which includes heat) is cut in half!
Q—How can I save on my phone bill? A—You can dial 10-10-220 before dialing your phone number to get cheaper long distance phone calls. Wait a couple seconds after dialing that to type in 1 and the area code and phone number.
*If I make an international call from U.S.A. to Turkey, first I dial 10-10-220 and wait a couple seconds; then I dial 01190 (011 gets international calls and 90 is Turkey’s country code). Then I dial the area code and phone number. After a pause it starts ringing.
*You can download Skype for free at www.skype.com and place video calls from your computer to other computers around the world for free.
*Millions of people are using Skype, according to their ad, so you can phone your friends and family with no long distance charge.
*You can also use Magic Jack to make unlimited long distance phone calls to home phones in the U.S. and Canada. Purchase a computer chip for $20 and then pay $20 for the first year and $20 a year thereafter. Go to www.magicjack.com. Also, you can carry it with you when you travel to Europe.

5--OPEN A DAYCARE CENTER IN YOUR HOME (This book is soon to be published.)
Q—What are some good outside activities for kids when it is cold? A—I would bundle up the children well and we would go outside to rake leaves or build snowmen. I believe in showing children how much fun work can be. (During the summer they would empty the water from their little wading pools onto plants after they were finished playing in it.)
*When it rained we would blow bubbles on the covered front porch. In the afternoons it was warmer than mornings, so the older children could swing or ride cars and wagons; I quit having tricycles as fall over too easily. They mostly ran up and down the driveway and around through the bushes. Luckily, none of the parents complained about them getting dirty as they had too much fun.
*Afterward, sometimes we would go into the house and bake cookies or pumpkin pie filling in little glass baking dishes.
Q—How can I leave my child at a daycare center when I am breastfeeding? A—One of the Mothers brought a little bottle of breast milk every day for her son and kept it in the freezer. She said it was worth more than gold. Four women in her office were breastfeeding at the time.
Q—What do you do when the children misbehave? A—The first time I make a request of the kids I ask them politely and say please. If they don’t do what I requested, like quit wrestling during reading time, I get more firm and separate the kids if I have to. Usually they follow the routine but if they are really rambunctious, I send them outside with one of the other teachers.
*One day I was in a really happy, dreamy mood and smiled when I requested them to do something. They just smiled back and ignored me. I think it is important to speak politely to children, the same way we would like to be spoken to.
*Take-away sometimes works, but only if you can follow through on it. One boy was careless with scissors so I did not let him use them for a few days.
*I remember one little girl who was 18 months old who was screaming. I took her into the next room and told her to stay there until she quit screaming. In 2 minutes she came back with a radiant smile on her face.
*I liked rewards for good behavior. Those who were quiet at naptime got to choose 2 stickers from the really expensive sheets. Some of the older ones also wanted to sit in one of the high chairs, so I made that a reward also. Parents did not always understand that reward, though.

6--FROM THE INNER HEART – ILLUMINATING MEDITATIONS ON THE ONE Also available at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Inner-Heart-Illuminating-Meditations-book/dp/B002WYJPRQ/
Q—How can I lighten up to relax and meditate? A—Laughter and music are medicine for the body and soul. I used to watch funny movies to laugh. Little children also help us to laugh.
*Let the music come out of you – hum, sing, whistle and make up words to match your inner feelings. It is your inner song of praise and love. Greet each day with music in your heart.
*Never let anyone steal your song, your laughter, your dream. Don’t let people tell you it does not sound good. Two professional singers told me that, but many people ask me to sing and I love singing alto in a choir at nursing homes.
*Be around people who respect you and like you. Sometimes it is not enough that they love you – being liked is very important.

7--SOUTHERN POEMS FROM EARLY 1900S Also available at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Southern-Poems-Early-1900s-ebook/dp/B002YK453C/
Q—As a city-bred woman, I would like to know what it was like to live out in the country.
A—Being out in the country at night, you can see many stars and it is very noisy. The frogs at the pond could keep you awake until you got used to them. Locusts also are very noisy, and once a swarm of cicadas surrounded my cabin and it sounded like I was in the center of a washing machine.
*During the daytime in the summer, there are many mosquitoes and flies, so you either cover up with a long-sleeve shirt and ignore them, or spray yourself with a bug repellent. It helps to wash sweat off often as it attracts more bugs. Since I do not have screen doors on my cabin, I have to close my doors at sunset or the mosquitoes rush in.
*Of course, during the early 1900s, life was much more difficult with only horses to get around to the schools and churches which were far away. Sometimes the kids would walk miles to school if they did not live in town. Now, I seldom walk in the country as everything is so far away.
*People then were lucky to have a well so they did not have to haul water. I remember how much easier my life became after I installed a well in my cabin. It took a lot of water to cook and clean and bathe; afterward the water was used to water my garden. I would purchase drinking water and reuse the jugs to fill with water from the park or my friend’s house.
*And forget flush toilets! They would haul their ‘night water’ to the outhouse in the mornings. Zoning requirements are very strict when building an outhouse these days, but they don’t smell much better! Adding lime during the summer helps.
*It is amazing how far we have come in less than a hundred years. We seldom have to burn wood or coal to heat our houses and air conditioning makes summer heat bearable.

Identifying the problem is half the answer. Replace negative emotions with good activities and positive affirmations.
Q—What should I do if I often hear a neighbor child screaming? A—If you observe or suspect that a child is being abused, you can report it anonymously at 1-800-4-A-Child or phone 911.
