Q–How can I attract butterflies to my garden? A–Here are a couple of excellent websites on how to attract butterflies, even in winter in Chicago!

http://my-butterfly-garden.com/36/flowers-that-attract-butterflies/. Also, http://www.chicagowildernessmag.org/issues/winter2002/mourning.html for link to a winter butterfly in Chicago.

Q–How can I get my cleomes (ET plants) to bloom every year? They only bloom every 2 years. A–Cleomes are biennials and they only bloom every 2 years. If you gather biennial seeds from at least 2 sources you can have blooms every year.

Q–When is a good time to plant flowers? A–You can start seeds inside with good lighting, but flowers of any size should not be planted outside until after the fear of frost. To find out your zone and the times to plant, please visit www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-dates and type in your zip code.

Q–When is a good time to plant trees? A–Everywhere I read said to plant trees in the fall or spring. I prefer to plant in the spring so that the trees [and bushes] have time to get established before harsh winter weather sets in.

Q–Are there restrictions on where to plant trees in my year? I would like one next to the curb – will that be a problem? A–If you plant a tree next to the sidewalk or driveway, the roots will eventually damage the sidewalk unless there is about 6 feet of space and the tree is a dwarf variety. If you plant the tree too close to your house, the roots will break through your water lines in search of water, especially maples and willows.

Also, grass and flowers do not grow well under trees as they need more sunlight and they compete with the tree for nutrients. You can mulch around your tree and even add a rock garden or a wrought iron circular seat.

Q–Is it a good idea to stake a tree when it is planted? A–If you put a stake alongside the tree trunk, the tree will not develop strength. If the tree is growing at an angle, you can thread a rope through a piece of hose so that the tree does not get cut and wrap this around the tree trunk. It can be attached to a 2’ tall stake stuck in the ground at an angle about 3’ from the tree.

In nature, trees are not staked and drooping and bending is normal and natural. If you want a tree branch to reach the ground to provide privacy, tie a brick onto the branch. In a year or so the branch will gracefully sweep to the ground.

But limb loss from the weight of fruit can be a problem. You can temporarily brace the branches with supports up from the ground or remove some of the fruits so that the branches do not break.

2–EASY TO EARN RENTAL INCOME is also available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Earn-Rental-Income-ebook/dp/B002WYJQDE/ *****************************************************************************************

Q–How do you take a vacation with tenants in your house? A–I decided early on that I would not be chained to my tenants and house. I leave for a few days and post emergency electrician and plumber phone numbers. I also leave my apartment key with a trusted tenant since my area is completely separate.

Q–Have you ever had anything stolen while tenants lived in your house? A–I only had a lovely turquoise bracelet stolen while a new tenant was painting my bedroom, but I cannot say whether that person did it or another visitor. I have insurance for my personal belongings as well as house and liability insurance. I cannot worry about things, although I do not leave valuables out in the open.

Q—How did you find cheap house insurance? A—I would phone around until I found an agent who was ‘hungry.’ It is amazing the different costs for similar insurance coverage. I always added on liability insurance in case anyone got hurt on my property, but thank God no one did.

3–AMERICAN IN TURKEY is also available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/American-in-Turkey-ebook/dp/B002YK456E/ ****************************************************************************************

Q–What is the weather like on the Mediterranean Sea? A–Right now it is around 70 degrees during the day and very sunny. The rainy season has passed and now flowers are starting to bloom. Tiny figs are growing on a tree within reach of my balcony. There is nothing like the sweet fragrance of orange and lemon blossoms and jasmine. Ahhh….

Q–What games do you play in Turkey? A–I have always enjoyed Monopoly, especially since I became an adult and learned how to win. There is an international version of Monopoly here with all the cards written in Turkish. It mentions Paris, New York, Sydney and other large cities throughout the world.

We play Okay, which has tiles similar to dominoes and is played like gin rummy. Backgammon is also popular. Soccer, or football as they call it in Europe, is by far the biggest sport for the kids and professional teams on TV. Volleyball and ping pong are also popular here.

*I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU A REALLY NEAT EMAIL A FRIEND SENT TO ME. A GROUP OF CHILDREN FROM 4 TO 8 YEARS OLD WERE ASKED WHAT LOVE MEANS TO THEM. HERE ARE THEIR ANSWERS:

REBECCA, AGE 8: 'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.'

BILLY, AGE 4: 'When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.'

CHRISSY, AGE 6: 'Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.'

TERRI, AGE 4: 'Love is what makes you smile when you're tired.'

DANNY, AGE 7: 'Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.'

BOBBY, AGE 7: 'Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.'

NIKKA, AGE 6: 'If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate,'

NOELLE, AGE 7: 'Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day.'

TOMMY, AGE 6: 'Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.'

CINDY, AGE 8: 'During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore.'

CLARE, AGE 6: 'My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.'

ELAINE, AGE 5: 'Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.'

CHRIS, AGE 7: 'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Brad Pitt.'

MARY ANN, AGE 4: 'Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.'

KAREN, AGE 7: 'When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.'

JESSICA, AGE 8: 'You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.'

AND THE WINNER WAS A 4-YEAR-OLD CHILD whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, 'Nothing, I just helped him cry'

5–SOUTHERN POEMS FROM EARLY 1900s is also available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Southern-Poems-Early-1900s-ebook/dp/B002YK453C/ ****************************************************************************************** AUNT DORA grew up with my Dad on a Tennessee farm next door to AUNT BLANCHE, WHO WROTE DOWN ALL THESE POEMS FOR ME. Even when they were both in the late 80s, Aunt Dora would phone Aunt Blanche each day to make sure all was well.

Since Aunt Dora and Dad were the youngest of 8 children (their youngest sister had died), they had to do the dishes for the whole family. With all these farm workers, the meals were large and so there were many plates and cups to wash. Aunt Dora said there was a cartoon where 2 kids walked down each side of the table and pushed dishes onto the other side of the table so that the other child had to wash them. She said she and Dad did the same thing.

Dad would sometimes get migraine headaches and would not have to wash the dishes on that day. So, Aunt Dora would make herself throw up so that she would get excused from washing dishes.

Aunt Dora and Dad would lie on their backs and make pictures out of the clouds when they were young. When she moved to Ohio she hid her suitcase and pillow outside so that her father would not know. Her Mom found out and decided to leave with her. Dad was also going to leave but he was promised a college education if he stayed and helped on the farm; it did not happen.

Aunt Dora worked in a rubber factory and would leave for work each day at 4 am. They would get home from work by 2 pm and would then drive out into the country for dinner. Sometimes they would drive an hour or so just to get ice cream cones.

Often Aunt Dora and her husband would visit our home. My middle brother hadn't started school yet, so he was 4 or 5 years old. When Aunt Dora came for a visit, he would greet her by running up to her with his cheeks puffed out filled with air. She would then pop the air out by squeezing his cheeks and we would all laugh.

Then, one day my brother saw her coming up the walk and ran to the sink and filled his mouth and cheeks with water, looking the same as when they were filled with air. When she squeezed them, water burst out all over her front. We had a good laugh about it but on later visits she refused, with a smile, to play that game even when he showed her that his mouth only had air in it. He was disappointed because it had been so much fun.

When I was an adult and lived near Aunt Dora, we would go out once a week for lunch and she would say, “I want something greasy.” She had a comfortable car with air conditioning and I would drive us in it to the restaurant, usually in the Amish area. She would always pay for the lunch. Sometimes we stopped at the bank and she would pick up her ‘paycheck’ – what other people called Social Security. She said she earned that money.

She had all her own teeth at 90 because she flossed daily and had her teeth cleaned by a dentist every 6 months. This was back in the days when people never heard much about doing this.

She was so funny and had a wry sense of humor. Even when she was in a nursing home in her 90s the nurses said she was always joking before she had a stroke. She had owned her own home with lots of acreage, but she put it in a relative’s name so that she would be able to live with them. It did not work out so she had to move into a nursing home. (The relative who took her house lost it in a bad financial deal.)

Q–What is a good way to save money on groceries? A– “Diet for a Small Planet” (available used at www.amazon.com) is an excellent book which explains how to cheaply obtain all the protein you need. I highly recommend the book. It suggests combining legumes with whole grains or milk (or beans and rice) to provide yourself with more readily digestible protein than a steak would provide, and at a much cheaper cost.

And of course you can stock up on non-perishable items or canned goods when they have excellent sales. The most expensive items are prepared food.

I only shop where I get discounts on my gasoline. Sometimes I get a fill-up with 30 cents or 50 cents off per gallon.

Q–What is a cheap way of landscaping on a slope? It is too steep to mow. A– Old-fashioned climbing roses can run rampant on a sunny slope so that you never have to mow again. Or plant thyme, a great groundcover which can replace lawns. It tolerates full sun and doesn’t need a lot of water once it is established, and you can start it cheaply by sowing seeds. Shady slopes can be covered with ivy or flowering vinca for year-around green.

Q–What is a cheap way to landscape my garden with no maintenance? A–I do not like to mow grass, so when it grew too high in sunny areas, I would dig it up and put in a flowerbed with perennials, flowers which bloom by themselves every year. I also added some bulbs close to the walkway and my door and they would come up by themselves each spring. Add a few small evergreens, a charming path, a birdfeeder and a birdbath to make the area beautiful year around. I plant very few annuals which only live one summer and must be watered often.

I do not like to spend a lot of money on my garden, so I purchase plants, bulbs and evergreens when they are drastically reduced. Also, I trade plants with friends and neighbors.

7–OPEN A DAYCARE CENTER IN YOUR HOME (Still being written) ****************************************************************************************** Q—What are some good toys for the kids when they are outside? A—I like low-riding big-wheels in the smaller size for toddlers. I found tricycles are dangerous as they tip over easily. Balls, a sandbox, wagon, a shallow swimming pool in the summer along with room to run worked very well in my daycare center. When it rained we stayed on the front porch and blew bubbles.

Q—What are some good toys for kids when they are inside the house? A—I usually bought toys at yard sales or thrift stores as they were so inexpensive. The toys allowed the children to use their imagination – musical instruments, a dress-up box of clothes and hats, leggos, toy kitchen dishes, crayons, paints, puzzles and books were their favorites.

Q—How did you keep your employees for so many years? A—First, I offered flex-time. It was the only benefit, but to me, it is by far the most important. I complimented them on their work often and gave 50 cent per hour raises yearly. Also, a mother could bring her child with her to work.

Q–Why do I keep replaying the same old tapes of my life; they are so embarrassing? A–When this happens to me I say ‘Done’ [short for ‘what’s done is done’] and ask God for forgiveness. I try to make amends to others when possible.

Q–What do you plan for your life? A–Often I repeat to myself: ‘All that is past is over; now we must go to search for God, truth and wisdom.’ Interestingly enough, when I was 18 years old I would ask people: ‘What is the truth?’ So I am happy to say that my focus is back on track, thank God. But that path is narrow and prayer and spontaneous songs of joy help keep me focused. I usually sing just a couple of bars over and over; I make up the words to suit the occasion.

I remember a difficult period where I felt so burdened. I was waiting for a bus and said a prayer – and instantly 1,000 tons lifted off my shoulders! I even looked around to see what was different. It was hard to believe, so I brought back all the pain and burdens again and once again said a prayer – and it was lifted again. I am definitely a believer in the power prayer.

‘The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.’ Unknown author
