*Go to Farmer’s Almanac website and type in your zip code for planting dates in your area: http://www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-dates/

*To extend your growing season, put large dark barrels in your greenhouse or in your sun porch to hold water and retain heat after sunset; it will release heat at night. See http://www.instructables.com/id/Greenhouse_From_Old_Windows/

*Use eggshell halves filled with peat moss for containers to start seeds. Store them in the egg carton in the sun and water carefully. When they are ready to plant in your garden, crack the shell and place the whole thing into your soil.

*Plant salad makings (like lettuce, spinach, parsley, edible flowers) in a wagon so that it can be easily moved to sunny or shady areas as the summer progresses. Be sure to add rocks before adding the soil and have at least one hole to release excess water.

You can also plant salad fixings in colorful toy buckets hanging in your window or in a cracked teapot. Or fill a laundry basket with rich soil and peat moss and have your plants grow out the side (an inexpensive version of the clay strawberry pot).

*Click here to find out which flowers are edible. Remember, some lily bulbs (and other plants like some mushrooms) are poisonous, so always be careful! http://whatscookingamerica.net/EdibleFlowers/EdibleFlowersMain.htm

2–EASY TO EARN RENTAL INCOME is also available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Earn-Rental-Income-ebook/dp/B002WYJQDE/ *****************************************************************************************

Q–How can I choose a property with rental capability? A–When I looked for my rental property, I chose one which had a living area for me separate from the rental area. I installed a doorway at the top of my steps so that I could have access to the rooms, but they did not have easy access to my apartment.

Q–How do you find handymen? A–I would put an ad in the newspaper for part time handyperson, must know electricity & roofing, $15/hr. and my phone number. I wanted them smart to know electricity and strong to be able to handle roofing. If I was impressed on the telephone, I would hire them for 2 hours to see how we worked together.

I would hire women when I could and enjoyed working with them as we could be friends. With men, I kept a more professional relationship. I always let the workers keep track of their own hours and they had keys if I knew them well enough to trust them. If they did not seem trustworthy, I quit using them.

*DO NOT OVERLOAD REFRIGERATORS AS THEY NO LONGER WORK WELL. I would replace a refrigerator when the tenants complained about it, but would move it into my apartment where it worked just fine and looked nicer than my old one.

3–AMERICAN IN TURKEY is also available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/American-in-Turkey-ebook/dp/B002YK456E/ ****************************************************************************************

Q–What is Turkish coffee like? A–It is very strong, like espresso, and is served in tiny demitasse cups and saucers. Afterwards, the cup is turned upside down so that someone can read their ‘fortune’ by looking at the way the thick settlement forms. Sadly, I do not like coffee so I do not get to enjoy this little service. Once, though, a friend put tea in my cup so I was happy with that.

*Roses, bougainvillea and many other bushes are flowering all over town. The pollen is so intense that my very large balcony was covered with yellow pollen one day. Aside from allergies, I love seeing the flowers. I saw tiny green oranges less than 1 inch across, so they will take a while to grow.

*Quilts are placed inside a very large pillowcase. The outer cover can easily be washed and the quilts and blankets are often aired outside on balconies. Turkish carpets are also aired in the sun.

*I sew clowns and was paid in olives by one lady; we both felt we got a good bargain. I traded another clown for some house maintenance work.

*Snails somehow made it to my balcony so I spread scouring powder across my threshold so that they do not enter my kitchen. They no longer come near my door. They are a bit too yucky for me!

4–FROM THE INNER HEART – ILLUMINATING MEDITATIONS ON THE ONE is also available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Inner-Heart-Illuminating-Meditations-book/dp/B002WYJPRQ/ ******************************************************************************************

*”Love is like a river; drink from it.” Rumi

*I spent Thanksgiving with some people who had just arrived from China and asked one of them what it was like to live in a country that doesn’t believe in God. She said she did not think religion was a good thing. Then I asked her as a doctor if she had ever seen miracles on the operating table and said that that was God working. She said she could believe in that kind of God.

*The shortcut to God is love.

*Don’t let anyone steal your dream, don’t let anyone steal your song. Hold them in your heart and cherish them, nurturing them to grow and fill your soul.

*Jealousy and bullying is not a show of affection. Be with people who are kind to you. You deserve it.

*’Genius 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.’ Albert Einstein

*Concentrate on the good and the bad will fall away.

5–SOUTHERN POEMS FROM EARLY 1900s is also available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Southern-Poems-Early-1900s-ebook/dp/B002YK453C/ ******************************************************************************************

Grandma, my Mom’s Mom, was raised in the mountains of West Virginia and never wanted to go back again after she moved North. She said living on a farm was very hard work. When she was in her 70s she still needed to get her wavy hair thinned and said she only washed her hair once a year as a child and that she had used rainwater from the rain barrel. She was one of the Irish with black hair and blue eyes, although some of her children and grandchildren had red hair and freckles.

Grandma’s first job was at the 5 and 10 cents store. She received a raise because she was always busy straightening the counter. During World War II she was a ‘Rita Riveter’ and had 3 sons in the war at the same time. It was extremely stressful for her, but she was happy when they all came home safely.

Grandma’s last child, Arthur, was killed when he was 6 years old by a young boy driving a car after school. Grandma went to the teenage boy’s mother and said she forgave him.

My Mom’s favorite aunt was Aunt Jenny, or ‘Aunt Bird’ as Mom called her. She was Grandma’s unmarried sister who lived in a little house in the mountains of West Virginia and worked as a seamstress. She did not have much money and when Grandma gave her any, she used it to work on the road which would increase the value of her property. Aunt Jenny was very religious, drank sassafras tea and ate healthy foods. Sometimes she would take a bus and show up at our door to surprise us. She was a very unique lady.

During the Great Depression, Grandma rented rooms in her house to boarders and moved her family to the 2-room attic. Her husband went to Pittsburgh to work on one of the bridges. Later, she bought an old mansion from her brother who had converted it into 5 apartments. She lived in each one of the apartments over the years. Grandma liked modern furniture and no live plants inside the house because of the dirt.

Everybody loved Mrs. Rice as Grandma was usually called. She loved gardening, cooked big meals for loved ones and played the piano. She would bake hot bread for us and fry chicken even though she did not like to eat it. She said that she used to have to kill chickens on the farm when she was young. Grandma always sent rolls and chicken home with us, and much later I realized that she did so to help our family as Mom was a widow with 3 small children. Her hot bread was so wonderful. After she died Mom was able to make it, but after Mom died I did not inherit the ability.

Grandma and I went to West Virginia when her twin brother died. I was 8 years old and my older cousin Ray treated me like an adult and said people should not argue religion. Often when I visited her, I would comb out her curls while she read the Bible. She told me ‘Blessed are the peacemakers’ when I stepped in to make peace between a couple of angry family members.

As a widow, she decided to get a husband so she lost weight, bought new clothes, learned to dance and drive a car and moved to Los Angeles where 2 of her sons lived. Her landlady told her she was not allowed to garden in the flowerbeds, so she moved back East to her own house and gardens. After she moved back she met my Step-Grandpop and was always proud to be with him. She asked me what year she was born in if she were 65 years old; she did not want him to know she was a couple years older than he was.

Grandma always told me to get married. When I asked her why, she said that I would have someone to take care of me when I got sick. When she had her final illness (an inoperable tumor the size of a basketball in her stomach), he helped take care of her.

I was sad, though, when family told her she would get well and go to California in the spring. I was going to tell her the truth and was holding her hand when she said, ‘Every hair on your head is numbered and when it is your time to go you go.’

After Grandma died, she and Dad would sometimes appear to me when I was going through a difficult period. Mom said she was surprised that they were together as they were not friends in life. I knew that they both loved me and were concerned about me. I think that God sends people (and angels) to watch out for us.

6–1000s OF WAYS TO SAVE $1000s YEARLY (Still being written) *****************************************************************************************

*The most delicious strawberry jam at a 10th the cost: I gave up trying to find delicious jam at the grocery store as I was spoiled by the ones my Turkish friends made. So, I plunged in. I bought a kilo (2.2 pounds) of strawberries for $1.75, cleaned and sliced them, added 4 cups of sugar and ole! After cooking it for 20 minutes or so, I have the original flavor. Now I just have to worry about not eating too much of a good thing.

*Save on your electric bill: [some excellent ideas from the internet] -When not in use, unplug your computer, TV, DVD player, etc. -Wash only full loads in your washing machine, using warm or cool water, add less detergent than suggested and hang out the clothes to dry. -Wash only full loads in your dishwasher and air dry the dishes. -Turn down the temperature on your refrigerator and freezer as it uses about 20% of your electric bill. -Lower the temperature on your hot water heater. -Lower the temperature on your A/C and furnace. -Clean your furnace and A/C air filters regularly.

*Change the font on your printer and *save more money* this year. Check out http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100406/ap_on_hi_te/us_tec_money_saving_fonts.

*If you want to set up a website, consider Yahoo.com as they provide free 24/7 live help desk.

*Save on your cell phone bill by texting as it takes much less time.

*Forget expensive (or cheap) plastic storage containers: I purchase veggies in glass jars and reuse them later; the tops always fit tightly and I store them together. Since I eat a lot of yoghurt, I carefully clean the quart-sized containers and use them for freezing individual servings of chicken stew or other leftovers. Be sure to only fill the containers about 2/3 full as the food expands when frozen.

*Hand wash your delicate clothing and save on dry cleaning bills.

*I quit buying some cheap cleaning products as it took 2 to 3 times the amount necessary to do what the more expensive product cost.

7–OPEN A DAYCARE CENTER IN YOUR HOME (Still being written) ******************************************************************************************

Q–What is the most important thing to consider in your daycare center? A–Safety is the most important thing in having children in your home. Follow every safety guideline religiously! Record bruises and if they are birthmarks, have the parents make a note in the child’s doctor’s records. One child had a birthmark on her back that looked like a bruise in the shape of a hand and we were very concerned at first.

*Out in the Pennsylvania mountains, a family adopted 5 children to keep them together. Earlier they had been their foster parents. What beautiful love! Later, there was a fire which destroyed everything and the outpouring from the local communities was tremendous, even though everything was insured. Even a temporary house was provided till theirs could be rebuilt. (It is interesting that the previous owner also had a fire in the same house.)

*Foster care pays people to take care of children. If the child has AIDS or another bad disease, extra money is paid and health care provided. The main thing is to be able to open your heart to children in need after your own kids are grown or even if you do not have kids.

*It is important that young children brush their baby teeth or have an adult do it so that their adult teeth will come in healthy. Adults usually lose their teeth to gum disease, so floss gently, get your teeth cleaned once or twice a year at the dentist’s office, use only a soft toothbrush and avoid your gums. Brush straight from the root of the tooth to its top, not in a circular motion or back and forth across the teeth.

*Permission slips must be signed for all medications, including baby powder and Vaseline. A prescription drug permission slip must include the name of the drug, the times of the day when the drug is to be administered and the exact dose required. Interestingly enough, I had a problem getting one of the doctors to write this for their child.
